Reason to Get a Comprehensive Periodontal Exam Each Year

Reason to Get a Comprehensive Periodontal Exam Each YearWe support the view of the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) regarding examinations. The AAP recommends that patients schedule a comprehensive periodontal evaluation (CPE) to ensure the health of their gums and teeth. This allows us to better assess your treatment needs and risks. Things can change as you get older. That is why a CPE should be scheduled yearly. Around 50% of the population over 30 years old currently has some form of gum disease. That is why you should ensure your periodontal health by setting an appointment for a CPE.

What Does a CPR Involve?

When you undergo a CPR, we will review several pertinent facets of your periodontal health. First, we will examine the teeth, carefully looking at your restorations, the position of the teeth, and how close they are to each other. Next, we will check the degree of plaque and tartar and where it is located. We will also use a probe to check the depth of the gum pockets. The level of inflammation is also assessed. We will examine your occlusion and ask you to bite down to check tooth movement or looseness, and see how your teeth meet. To check for bone loss, we take x-rays, which are also used to evaluate the quality of the jaw bone.

What Risk Factors Do You Consider When Performing a CPE?

We can get a better idea about your periodontal profile by assessing risk. Risk factors increase for periodontal disease if you smoke, use tobacco, or you have a family history of periodontal disease. In addition, the risk increases with age. People with systemic conditions, such as cardiovascular disease or diabetes, are also at a greater risk for contracting periodontitis.

The time you take in investing your time and undergoing a CPE will benefit you enormously. By having the exam each year, you can address any periodontal problems before they become severe. Give us a call today to schedule a CPE. Our professional periodontal staff can accommodate your scheduling needs.
