To restore gum tissue, you need to contact our periodontal team about your options. Recession can be treated in one of several ways. When your gums have receded to the point where they are exposing your teeth's roots, you need to take measures to cover the roots and protect them from further decay.
What Is Gum Recession?
Receding gums may result from periodontal disease or from brushing too hard over a span of time. The gum cannot grow back after it has receded like the epithelial tissue of the skin. Therefore, you need to look at what you can do to restore the gum tissue around the tooth. If the gum pulls away from the teeth and deteriorates, recession is the outcome. That is why it is important to schedule a complete periodontal exam (CBE) each year. During this exam, we measure the pocket depth of your gums to check the degree of gum disease. If the pocket depth is quite small, it typically indicates that your gums are healthy and no further treatment is needed. If the depth the gum is deep, we may have to deep clean your teeth and/or plan a bone graft or surgery.
What Procedures Treat Receded Gums?
Root scaling and planing is a deep professional cleaning that gets rid of plaque and hardened tartar. During this procedure, we deep clean the affected teeth down to the depth of their pockets. We follow up by planing or smoothing the roots so the gum can reconnect to the teeth. For severe periodontal disease, we may recommend gum grafting to restore the gum tissue lost to recession. We follow one of three procedures to perform the graft. In two of the procedures we take connective tissue or gum tissue from another area of the mouth and suture it at the recession site. In another process, we produce a flap of gum tissue that we use to cover the recession.
