How Can You Still Get Gum Disease with Dental Implants?

How Can You Still Get Gum Disease with Dental Implants?Periodontal patients mistakenly believe that they totally eliminate gum disease by adding dental implants. However, you can still get gum disease after the implants are placed. To learn why this happens, read the following information.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are used to replace tooth roots that anchor the teeth in place. The implants are made of titanium, which is known to fuse well with jaw bone tissue. Therefore, restorations can be made that can be attached to the implants. Single implants normally hold crowns while multiple implants may hold fixed dentures or bridges. It takes about six months for implants to heal so permanent restorations can be placed. In the interim, temporary restorations are usually made while the patient waits for the implants to heal. When implants and the restorations they hold are cleaned, special tools are used to remove plaque and tartar and bacteria.

Why Gum Disease Can Still Develop with Dental Implants

If you don't take care of your dental implants like you do your regular teeth, you can still experience a gingival infection. That means you need to brush and floss each day to prevent periodontal problems. One of the infections that can occur is peri-implantitis, which is an infection around an implant. Peri-implantitis not only affects the health of the natural teeth and gums, it increases the risk of implant failure. Therefore, you still need to schedule a comprehensive periodontal exam yearly if you have implants.

While dental implants are basically fake restorations that are designed to replace the natural teeth you lost, it does not mean you are immune to getting gum disease or peri-implantitis. You still need to properly care for your implants and natural teeth by brushing and flossing twice a day. Contact our periodontal team to schedule an exam and periodontal consultation. The sooner you take this step, the easier it will be to treat any ensuing problems.
