Tips for Getting Used to a New Set of Dentures

Tips for Getting Used to a New Set of DenturesNew dentures may initially feel a little strange when eating or perhaps even when speaking. There is something new in your mouth, coming into contact with your cheeks, gums and tongue. You might even feel minor aches and pains in your gums and cheeks. But with a few simple suggestions, and a little bit of time, we can have you feeling like new.

Go Soft and Strong

Initially, it is a good idea to choose a diet concentrated on soft foods, such as soups, yogurt, mashed potatoes and yams, creamy cheeses, and similar items. These foods put less pressure on your gums, and will help avoid any pain putting pressure can bring. Likewise, avoid hard and crunchy foods that are harder to chew. Be sure also to exercise your cheeks by stretching and moving them around. Your cheek muscles help to send food to your throat, and stronger cheek muscles will relieve pressure on your gums, which will ease any related discomfort.

Sing it and Stick it

Believe it or not, singing your sentences can help your tongue and cheeks get accustomed to new dentures. While you may not wish to sing your order at the drive-through, when you are alone, it is good practice to sing words and phrases, so that your mouth learns to work with your new equipment. Also, try out different adhesives for your dentures, to find the one that feels best. What may feel right to one person may feel off to another, so it is important to find what is right for you.

New dentures can bring new life to your day, allowing you to eat and enjoy foods you might have avoided for years. But to get optimal results, it's important to be proactive. And if you have any questions or concerns, call us – we are here for you.
