How Gum Disease Could Result in Weight IssuesA healthy mouth promotes a healthy body. They are linked together, one affecting the other. If you have been trying to lose weight, but are finding it difficult it could be gum disease causing the problem. Most people are not aware of how interlinked oral health is to overall body health and overlook the face problems with gums and teeth could be to blame. When you are suffering from tooth or mouth pain it is very easy to alter what you eat.

Weight Loss and Gum Disease

With gum disease the underlying structure that supports the tooth begins to falter and the tooth begins to feel unsupported and loose in your mouth. When that happens, we tend to avoid foods that aggravate the sensation which means hard crunching foods like fresh fruits and vegetables are avoided. Because heavily processed foods are generally softer and easier to chew, we substitute them for the fresh fruits and vegetables. Those have higher fat content and more sugar and salt. By eating the processed food, we begin to take in unhealthy doses of those ingredients than is healthy for our bodies. This can lead to excessive weight gain, making it extremely difficult to lose weight.

Gum disease can also interfere with our workouts which is one important way for us to burn calories which helps to lose weight. How does gum disease interfere? Think about how you feel when you are sick. You have low energy and that is because your body is using energy to fight off the infection. Gum disease is an infection and although it does not take as much as the flu it still takes your energy and makes it difficult to commit to an exercise plan.

When exercising it takes a lot of commitment and when there are additional complications, it makes it hard to stay with it. If you need more information, call us.
