What Symptoms Do Most People with Advanced Gum Disease Experience? When you have advanced gum disease, you will know it, provided you understand the symptomatology. While the first stages of gum disease are not really noticeable, gum disease, in its advanced stage, cannot help but be noticed. The following information details what happens when you have periodontitis.

What Is Advanced Gum Disease?

Advanced gum disease is the final stage of gum disease. While the first stage of gum disease, gingivitis, can be reversed, advanced gum disease is serious, and results when the first stage is not treated, or the patient neglects his or her dental health. By the time the disease gets to the advanced stage, pus may develop and the gums are usually swollen and tender to the touch.

What are the Symptoms of Periodontitis?

Advanced gum disease, also called periodontitis, is marked, as noted, by a swelling of the gum, gum recession, bleeding, and irritation. Tooth mobility is often evident as is sensitivity. Frequently, the patient cannot bite down to eat, which limits what he or she can eat to soft foods, soups, or stews. When we assess periodontitis and recommend treatment, we will first check the depth of the dental pockets. This will permit us to see how far the disease has progressed. We will also check the amount of recession. In cases where the roots are exposed, we often have to perform gum graft surgery. We will either harvest gum tissue from another site or use tissue next to the affected area. In addition, we may advise that the patient receive a scaling and root planing (SRP) to remove the tartar and plaque in the gum's pockets or at the roots.

Do you believe you have periodontitis? If so, you need to contact us immediately. Do not delay getting treatment, as gum disease, in the advanced stage, needs professional intervention.
