What Are The Stages Of Gum Disease?Periodontal disease is characterized by inflammation, redness, and bleeding of the gums and the bony structures that support of our teeth. However, there is a classification of this disease's progress that is useful to make a forecast for practical purposes. It is important that you know these stages so that you can identify how urgent the dental assistance you need is.

The First Stage is Gingivitis

All gum disease begins with inflammation of the gums. It is caused by the proliferation of pathogenic bacteria in the form of a plaque. With proper treatment, this stage is fully reversible. Generally, good oral hygiene is adequate.

The Second Stage is Initial Periodontitis

As the growth of plaque and inflammation of the gums continues, periodontitis begins. The gum groove increases at this stage. Home care is not enough, and professional treatment is necessary.

The Third Stage is Moderate Periodontitis

If the previous stage is not properly treated, the gum begins to retract, and the bone support of the teeth is affected up to a third of it. Here, the treatment becomes more complex and some surgical techniques may be needed to repair the damage, as the pathogenic bacteria need to be completely removed.

The Final Stage is Advanced Periodontitis

At this level, the affected teeth are mobile, unstable, and could even fall out at any time. More than half of the insertion surface has been lost and the disease has progressed to at an alarming level and needs urgent dental attention. Chewing discomfort and infections are evident at this stage.

Now that you can recognize the stages of gum disease, you should know that the earlier you get treatment, the better your prognosis. Do not wait until you are in an advanced phase to seek help.
