Does Diabetes Leave Your Mouth Open to Gum Disease?Diabetes can lead to problems with gum infections and disease. That is why you need to make sure that you take special care and monitor your condition with your physician.

How Diabetes Affects Gum Health

To understand how diabetes can affect your oral health, it helps to define the condition. Diabetes results from a disorder that is related to digestion. Diabetes is categorized into three main categories – Type 1, Type 2, and gestational diabetes. If people with diabetes do not monitor or control their disease well, gum disease can become a problem. Also, the body's response to a gum infection can lead to blood sugar issues. As a result, having diabetes and gum disease can become a vicious spiral if both are not treated simultaneously.

How Gum Disease Develops in Diabetics

Diabetes causes changes in the blood vessels. The vessels become thick, which reduces the flow of nutrients in the system, including waste removal from the body's tissues. When this happens, the weakened blood flow also weakens the bone and gums, which opens them up to infection. Moreover, when diabetes is not controlled correctly, the glucose levels in the mouth fluids become higher, promoting the growth of the bacteria that causes gum disease. Also, periodontal disease can cause blood sugar to rise, which, in turn, makes it more difficult to control diabetes.

Treating the Problem

To combat gum infections, you need to control your glucose levels and practice good oral hygiene at home. This means you need to brush your teeth twice a day for 2 minutes at a time and floss daily for the same length of time. You also need to see us and have a comprehensive periodontal evaluation (CPE) completed. Taking a positive stance will help you deal with your gum disease as well as your diabetes.

If you have diabetes, you are at an increased risk for periodontal disease. Give us a call today to schedule an appointment for a CPE.
