Healthy Gums Go Far Beyond Aesthetics

Healthy Gums Go Far Beyond AestheticsWhen it comes to oral health, most people focus on their teeth and forget their gums. What they don't know is that gums are equally important in determining your oral health. You could have a bright smile but have poor oral health due to infected gums. No matter how strong and healthy your teeth seem to look, it is almost useless if your gums are in bad shape. Infected gums are very harmful and could lead to tooth loss if left untreated. Therefore, taking good care of your gums should be a top priority. You can keep your gums healthy by practicing good oral hygiene and watching out for the foods you eat.

Good Oral Hygiene

You should brush your teeth at least twice a day. This helps get rid of plaque and food particles stuck between your gums and teeth. You should also scrub your tongue thoroughly when brushing because it can retain bacteria. It is recommended that you use a soft-bristled toothbrush that will easily get in between your teeth and the far end of your gums. You should also consider an electric or a battery-powered toothbrush for the best results. Brushing thoroughly helps reduce the risk of gum infections like gingivitis that could easily develop. You are also reminded to change toothbrush heads at least once in three months to avoid infections.

Watch the Foods You Eat

Our bodies are as good as what we eat, and the same applies to our gums. Therefore, there are foods that help improve your gum health while others cause harm. You should drink water and use dairy products on a regular basis to help keep your gums in good health. On the other hand, sugary foods like candy can cause gum infections like gum disease. They can also lead to tooth decay. Therefore, you should be careful with the foods you eat. Contact our offices for more information on the importance of good gum health.
