Most Overlooked Symptoms of Gum Disease

Most Overlooked Symptoms of Gum DiseaseGum disease is a common oral condition that affects your gums. Even though it can cause severe consequences, gum disease can be easy to overlook. This is because most people focus more on their teeth and ignore their gums. Another reason is that gum disease can have symptoms that will only start to show after it has advanced. However, in some cases, the symptoms of gum disease might show only for you to overlook them. This is why it is important to know some of the most commonly overlooked symptoms of gum disease.

Chronic Bad Breath

You could easily think your bad breath is due to a failed oral routine when it is actually a sign of gum disease. A bad breath commonly occurs due to bacteria in your mouth producing stinky waste products that leave a bad taste in your mouth. When you have gum disease, the bacteria on your gums break down good particles and produce VSCs. These are volatile sulfur compounds that have a very bad smell. The more advanced your gum disease is, the more VSCs are produced. This will only worsen the bad breath. Therefore, if you notice chronic bad breath, you should come in for an extensive examination immediately.

Receding Gums

Most people don't notice when their gums are receding, which is one of the symptoms of gum disease. As the condition advances, it breaks down the gums and separates them from your natural teeth. In most cases, this separation is not noticed until it is too big. Gum recession makes your teeth look longer than normal as gums move away from them. You shouldn't ignore this sign as it implies the presence of gum disease.

Changes in Bite

When the bone supporting your teeth starts to erode, they might shift in position. This results in changes in the bite. Contact our offices for more information on the signs of gum disease and why you shouldn't ignore them.
