Does Gum Disease Lead to an Increased Risk of Cancer?

Gum disease is a serious oral condition that affects your gums. It is caused by bacteria that accumulate on your teeth gums due to poor oral health. This condition can be reversed in its early stages by treatment or improved hygiene. However, if left untreated, it can advance to a severe stage known as periodontitis. Periodontitis is irreversible and often leads to tooth loss. Apart from its obvious consequences like tooth loss, gum disease has also been linked with cancer. Research shows that gum disease leads to an increased risk of cancer.
Cancer and Gum Disease
When you have gum disease, you are at risk of many health problems other than possible tooth loss. Having been linked with heart problems, a study from Harvard University also confirmed that gum disease increases the chances of cancer. According to the study, the microbes camping between your gums and teeth can increase the risk for esophagus and stomach cancers.
Individuals with a history of gum disease are 52% more likely to develop stomach cancer and 43% more likely to develop esophageal cancer than those with healthy gums. The risk is even higher among individuals with severe gum disease. This is a clear indicator of how gum disease can increase the risk of cancer. This condition has also been linked with lung cancer and respiratory problems.
As much as gum disease is dangerous to your overall health, you can easily prevent it. You can do so by practicing good oral hygiene. Therefore, brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss on a regular basis. You should also be careful with the foods you eat. Avoid sugary foods that can attract bacteria. You should also come in for regular dental checks. Contact our offices for more information on the connection between gum disease and cancer.
